I think technology has made the world better. You can find information on things faster. Without the Internet, I'd have to wait until a book I requested arrived at the library, and if the library doesn't have a book on a subject I want, I'm out of luck, unless I want to buy the book (which might be hard, since lots of bookstores in my area seem to be closing).
You can also talk to people (assuming they're honest about their personality and experiences) if for some reason, you can't get out to meet people.
Also, if you're an artist, you can set up a blog or a youtube channel and attract viewers/listeners/readers that way. You're not limited to your own city, which may not be interested the kind of work you do. It makes it easier for people to find an audience (or someone who can critique their work).
Of course, you will find bad fanfiction and bad fanart, and you will find unsavory characters and misinformation, but those were around before the internet. We're just more aware of them because we can see them more easily. (And they're not all bad. You just have to be careful.)
My major was studio art. I will use it for my career, since I want to illustrate my own books (and do my own cover/album art). Also, I really like to draw and set up photographs, and since the people hiring are just using the degree as a signaling thing/filter and it doesn't matter what degree you get (unless you're going to be a doctor), I figured I might as well get a degree in something I like.
Some people might think art degrees are useless, but I think I can at least find a use for the skills I learned getting it. And if I don't, I'm sure I'm smart enough to be able to do something else.
I can write songs. I can sing, too, but I have terrible stage fright.
I guess I can also build Sims 2 houses, but I hardly get a chance to play-test them, so I don't know how useful they'd be as an actual virtual residence. They look pretty according to the people who look at the screen when I'm building them, though.
If you could only listen to one song the rest of your life what would it be?
I'd either rather listen to "Railroad Boy" by The Magnetic Fields, or "Witch in the Ditch" by Erasure. I never get tired of those two songs. The evoke just the right feelings and imagery (and color, since I have synesthesia). Also, I'm a sucker for dreamy synthpop.

A portal to the seventh dimension. Oh, wait, you mean clothes.
Then, a satin turquoise bustier with black lace that I wear with fishnets and a red kilt.
I keep it right next to my pink elephant costume and cowboy boots.
